What's In A Name?

What's In A Name?

We all have one.

Do you know what your name means?

Is it a reflection of who you are?

Throughout scripture, the idea of naming is fundamental to God. Identity is a constant theme. In fact, there are hundreds of names for God that describe his character.

There is a story in Matthew 3 where John baptizes Jesus, and as he is raised from the waters of the Jordan River, the voice of God the Father names him “Beloved Son.” The message version puts it like this… a Son “chosen and marked” by His Father’s love. Loved because His Father IS love.

But who are we? What is our true identity?

So many voices in our minds are speaking and have spoken to us over our life span. Many of which we aren’t even aware of. Voices that have given us a name. Voices we have agreed with, and often unknowingly.

Some are actual voices of others, and some are background tracks that run constantly in our subconscious.

"You are too much."

"You will never be enough."

"What are you, an idiot?"

"You're too sensitive."

Several years ago, my therapist stopped me in my tracks when she told me that 90 percent of the time, most of the space in my mind was filled with Megan talking to Megan!

And let me tell you, that conversation was a constant stream of lies I subconsciously believed about who I thought I was.

I knew in my head that God had a different view of me, but I really don't think I believed it at a heart level.

You see, we have an enemy who is the author of lies. He is sneaky. He is cunning. He is relentless. He will fight tooth and nail to convince us of who we are not.

Over the past few months, as I create a program for my clients, I have read a stack of books about our thoughts, emotions, and identity. I have searched the scriptures for all the names God has for me. My true identity... So that I can suit up for the spiritual battle at hand and also equip my clients to do the same. I'm ready to drop the narrative I have agreed with for so long and receive my true identity with open hands and heart.

What about you? Are you ready to receive your true identity?

Let me encourage you today with this…

You are also “chosen and marked” because you have a Heavenly Father who claims you as His! In the same way, He declared Jesus His. “He stopped what He was doing, turned around to find you, and looked you right in the eyes and said so, with gusto and delight.” Amy Seiffert-Your Name Is Daughter

"We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!" Ephesians 2:10 The Passion
